Developmental Psychologist Says Teenagers Are Different

Laurence Steinberg (above) is a developmental psychologist at Temple University in Philadelphia and one of the leading experts in the United States on adolescent behavior and adolescent brain biology.

In this short interview in the NY Times, Dr. Steinberg says that "when it comes to crime, [teenagers] are less responsible for their behavior than adults. And typically, in the law, we don’t punish people as much who are less responsible."

Do you agree with Dr. Stienberg's opinion that we should not punish teenagers in the same way as we punish adults for the same crime? Explain your position.

  1. Do you agree with Dr. Stienberg's opinion? yes i do agree with his opinion. I agree becuase from a young child to a teenager to an adult your mind still developes and teenagers minds are ten times different then adults. Teens are just starting to begin to develope the minds of adults. In my opinion teens shouldnt be punished the same way adults do because we are still developing.

  2. I agree with the Doctor because people do change over time and you should always be givin a second chance. Especially with something as important as an entier life.

  3. i think that teanagers over the age of 16 should get punnished just as much as any adult would; were not stupid and we should get punished for our actions.. I think that the reason most of the teenagers now are really bad is because they think hey, im not 18 yet I can do whatever I want to do and get away with more than half of it. And I know that from experience other teenagers have said that to me.
