The Digital Life...
Researchers once thought that the use of electronic devices among children and teenagers could not go up. They were wrong:
The average young American now spends practically every waking minute — except for the time in school — using a smart phone, computer, television or other electronic device, according to a new study from the Kaiser Family Foundation...
While most of the young people in the study got good grades, 47 percent of the heaviest media users — those who consumed at least 16 hours a day — had mostly C’s or lower, compared with 23 percent of those who typically consumed media three hours a day or less. The heaviest media users were also more likely than the lightest users to report that they were bored or sad, or that they got into trouble, did not get along well with their parents and were not happy at school.
Read the rest of the article and then comment on your own media usage. Are you above or below the average? Do you think this trend of increased use of electronic devices is good or bad? What are the positive and negative aspects of this trend in our society?

At the moment I am way below the average with no tv, cell phone, or internet.I think the increased use of electronics is both good and bad. Its good because eventually the world will be even more consumed by technology then it is now and kids should know how to work the stuff that will be our future. Its is bad however because kids grades are suffering for it.
ReplyDeleteOn average I spend two hours a day on the computer and watching TV. I don't really have an opinion on whether or not kids increase the time they spend on technology is bad or not. With some kids it is a bad thing and with others it's not. But I do think that parents should limit the time that their children spend using the techonology.
ReplyDeleteCompared to most people i believe that i am above the average but unlike a lot of the people who are above average and do bad in school i study or read while i am watching tv. In my opinion this increasing usage of electronics is not good because like the article explained a lot of the people who are above the average are the ones more likely to have bad grades or to be board or sad. There are positives to this trent like you can stay intouch with parents and friends while you are not at home. Also you can keep up to date with things like facebook or email while away from your home computer. But where there are positives there are negatives and this is no different. This trend is causing people to become dependant of these electronics and its causing a downward sprial in the community. All in all this new trend, in the long run, is not going to be good for our country.
ReplyDeleteI dont really use the computer as much as i used to, i used to have to be on in 24/7 my sister and i would litterly fist fight to get on first, but that was in like middle school; now that i am in high school i go out a lot more and just hang out with my friends. I actuly think that the computer is quite borring unless im downloading music or have nothing better to do. I do have my phone with me 24/7 and freek out if i dont have it. It drives me crazy if i dont have it or if it is dead! I feel like no one can get ahold of me and i hate it.
ReplyDeletei use electronics alot too but i dont think its that bad for the community. i do think that kids are going to use electronics alot more. but to a point i think its not good for the kids because it is making kids not do good in school but other than that i think its fine.
ReplyDeletei spend a whole lot of time using electronics. just about 7/8 of my day. i think the new trend could be good because people are getting into the future technology but bad because if thats all kids are doing then people being healthy will be very low.
ReplyDeleteI feel that playing video games, using cellular devices, an dmany other smart phone or electronic devices, are becoming such a bad habbit to kids. Many companies are trying to focus on little kids, at young ages where they feel they need video games. The prices of all these are growing tramendously. cell phones are coming to almost $500, some are over, depending on what you are looking for. Some kids can't even go minutes without them. Even while driving causing increasing rates of death due to cell phones. I feel that parents need to take a step in the amount of time they have on these electronical devices.
