2/19/10 - Digital_Nation Question 1
According to the latest Kaiser Family Foundation data, 8 to18 year-olds are spending more than 50 hours a week with digital media. That's more than a full work week.
Is this too much? Are kids today actually hurting themselves by using this much digital media? Why or why not?

no i do not think that more than fifty bours a week with digital meadia is bad at all. we live in a society where thats normal. you have cell phones which you can take anywhere. even at school we are asked to use some. i think we should make digital media even a bigger part of our lives.
ReplyDeleteI think that this is way too much. 50 hrs a week of media leaves them little to no time to do the important things like homework. digital media wont get u into a good college. Kids are getting not nessesarily hurt but could end up a little messed up. if they get exposed to something bad early the could be worse in the long run.
ReplyDeleteI think that 50 hours spent on the computer each week is too much. Kids are hurting themselves by using so much digital media but at the same time they're not. They are hurting themselves because they could be doing something else; something that's healthier. Kids are not hurting themselves if they are doing something educationl though. For example, when I am on the computer, I'm usually reading or writing and that does not hurt me at all.
ReplyDeleteI agree with kelsi all the way. If kids spend all their time using digital media, they won't do anything important and eventually that will affect their education which will affect the rest of their lives.

ReplyDeleteI disagree with you about technology and college. If you look closly a lot of college students use personal laptops to help them organise thier work. They can use thier technology to help with reaserch, papers, and projects. This usage of media can help us greatly and as it may seem like a lot now once you reach the college level it will not seem like that amout of time is so outragous.
i do think that 50 hrs. of digital media is to much, on the other hand though not everyone is using digital media for bad things that waste time. Some kids use it to do school work and then they check their e-mails, myspaces, and facebook. that really isn't bad at all. it doesn't really matter how much time you spend using digital media because its not hurting anybody.
ReplyDeleteIn response to kelsi harmons post..i think that 50 hours a week is no where near as much as she makes it sound. We have the rest of our lives to do important things, were kids, it dont really matter if we waste ourn, ives away at our age.
ReplyDeletehm, honestly I do think more then 50hr's on a computer is harming to a child. Because their killing themselves in so much media attention. then going out and doing something that invovles some physical activity. For me i'm not always on the computer and doing something to waste my time. I usually am doing something that invovles other people and not wastinh my time. then for other people that their whole world is invovled around the computer or media attention.

ReplyDeleteI agree with her. Most kids do hurt themselves by being on the computer to much. Some kids can also being doing things on the computer that is worth while, that won't hurt them. But if your spending hours and hours on the computers it could hurt your eyes.

ReplyDeleteAs high school may seem unimportant to some people, what you do now is reflected onto what is called a transcript. This is what colleges look at when you apply. These transcripts are the main decider to whether or not you get an acceptance letter. Where media usage is not bad, we should not mearly "waist our lives." So people at this age should try and apply themselvs and work towards their futures.
In reponse to breanna Cowher's post. I do agree with you on how people use the digital media. some do use it to do homework and check e-mails. but then there's others that sit there for hours at a time and rade myspace, or fackboook. And such. if it isn't you using it, then why worry about how much other people around you use the media.
ReplyDeletei agree with kayles post because what's it really hurting spending time on the computer. not a thing, its alright to be on the computer and cell phones because in todays life using technology for anybody on a daily basis is normal you might as well learn to use it now and be good at it rather than be lost later when you need it.

ReplyDeleteI wholeheartedly agree with you. just because getting a job and going somewhere in life is not important to some people it is important to most. i know that at least the majority of the class would rather have a good job instead of one pumping gas a sheetz
no i think that it will help up learn different ways and expand friendship and relationship
